OVERVIEW

Optometry is a healthcare profession dealing with vision and eyecare.

BSc Optometry is a full-time undergraduate program. It is a four-year degree program. Out of these 3years training based and undertaken at the Ophthalmology Department in Father Muller Medical College, affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences,Karnataka.

Career scope of BSc Optometry course

BSc Optometry course offers a wide variety of career opportunities to the graduates. They can work in a variety of settings such as primary healthcare, corporate, public sector or even move into research and academics.

Apart from diagnosing refractive errors and fitting of glasses, optometrists also examine and help diagnose diseases of the eye. In addition to providing glasses, Optometrist provide corrective devices such as contact lenses and devices to support low vision. In most eye hospitals,ophthalmologists and optometrists work as team. Optometry students can choose general practice or select such specialties as contactlenses, vision therapy, and orthoptics, learning disabilities, pediatrics and occupational vision.Scope of Optometry as a profession is increasing in India as vision related problems like refractory issues such as Myopia is increasing in the county.

COURSE HIGHLIGHTS

The student shall undergo a period of certified study extending over four academic years including one-year internship. The course is affiliated with Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka and availability of seats is 20.

SKILLS YOU WILL ACQUIRE

Graduates of this four-year undergraduate programme will be qualified to work as optometrists, who can perform the following tasks:

  • Correction of refractive errors of the eye and prescription of glasses.
  • Designing and fitting of contact lenses and low vision aids.
  • Diagnosis and Orthoptic treatment of binocular vision anomalies.
  • Detection of eye related systemic and neurological diseases.
  • Primary eye care in educational institutions, rural communities, urban slums, and as Occupational Optometrist in industries.
  • Rehabilitation of patients with severe visual impairment and blindness
  • Educate patients about their eye health and refer them to ophthalmologists for surgical or more advanced medical treatment if necessary.
