Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology was established in 1999 and is located in the 2nd floor of B-block of the Medical College building. The department consists of an established museum, library and demonstration room with good teaching and learning materials. The department is involved in teaching and training the medical students in performing the medicolegal work and conducting research work.
The department undertakes the medicolegal autopsies on cases from Dakshina Kannada, neighbouring districts and Kerala State. Also, the department is actively involved in attending and issuing certificates in medicolegal cases at Casualty.
The museum consists of materials of medicolegal importance such as specimens, charts, weapon of assault, and chemicals & plants of toxicological importance.
The Poison Control Centre established under the department is involved with an analysis of materials collected at hospital in poisoning cases and information on poisons.
