Microbiology

OVERVIEW

Microbiology department deals with the diagnosis of infections caused by microorganisms which are usually invisible to our naked eye. Mr B.N. Saralaya was the first person who was instrumental in setting up of ‘Micro’ laboratory in the year 1978. The Diploma in Medical Lab Technology (DMLT) course was started in the year 1979 marking the beginning of academics. Over a period of years, the laboratory was developed by various Microbiologists and dedicated technical staff. When the long cherished dream of Medical College became fruitful in the year 1999, a well established department of Microbiology was set under the able guidance of Dr Govind Bhat and later by Dr Kavitha Dinesh. Dr B Rekha heading the department since 2002.

The department attained a steady progress over the years, and added many feathers to the cap by addition of MD and PhD courses. Apart from these the department is also involved in active teaching for nursing and allied health courses. The students from this department have excelled in academics and have made us proud by bagging ranks in the university examinations. The department has upgraded and adopted the most advanced diagnostic facilities from time to time as a commitment to provide quality care. As a part of this commitment to quality the microbiology laboratory was accreditated by NABL (National accreditation board for testing and calibration laboratories) in August 2012. The success of the department is the result of dedication of the staff and the commitment on the part of the management.

The diagnostic tests available in Microbiology central laboratory are
