OVERVIEW

The department was started in the hospital in the year 1970 under the stewardship of Dr.A.V.Shetty. He was responsible for nurturing the department through its initial phase and making it well known all over the district. He continued as chief till 1980. Subsequently Dr Shantharam Baliga, Dr Prakash Somayaji Dr Errol Pinto have served the institution. In 1992 the management obtained permission from the MCI to start the degree and diploma courses . We are one of the few colleges in the country to have got recognition for PG courses ahead of UG courses. The first HOD was Dr Gertrude Joshua who continued till 1994 when Dr B. Sanjeev Rai took over the reins. Under his leadership the department blossomed. From 2004 onwards the department is headed by Dr. K. Varadaraj Shenoy.

From 2004 – 2011 - Dr. K. Varadaraj Shenoy was the head of the department and from October 2011, the department is headed by Dr. Pavan Hegde.

Since 1992 over 75 degree and diploma holders have passed out from the department. Initially the department was functioning from the old childrens ward . In 2001 we shifted to the new premises in FrMuller General Hospital.
