Mental Health Nursing

Overview

The Department of Mental Health Nursing provides excellent service in psychiatric nursing education, research and practice which include comprehensive and holistic nursing care services aiming at preventive, promotive, curative and rehabilitative components of neuropsychiatric care in the hospital as well as in the community. The inception of the department took place with the beginning of post graduate courses in Father Muller College of Nursing in 1992.

The department is having well qualified faculty from different universities across India. The faculty members are actively involved in teaching the undergraduate and post graduate students, guiding them in patient care and research activities and conducting various extension programmes. The department, in collaboration with the department of psychiatry, Father Muller Medical College provides services at the satellite clinic, Kattipala every first Monday of the month since March 2014. The department conducts awareness programmes on mental health related topics in schools and various urban –rural areas of Mangalore.

 

Objectives

  • To motivate the students to practice their knowledge for the development of practical skills, to become efficient professional mental health nurses as well as to remain lifelong learners.
  • To develop the skills of UG & PG nursing students, in the area of class room teaching as well as clinical teaching methods to teach our clients and public at large.
  • To emphasize the importance of taking care of the psychological aspects of clients with physical disorders or disabilities of special and vulnerable group.
